Want to check a whole product at once? Use the comedogenic ingredient checker or the pore-clogging checker.

Note: Comedogenicity ratings are general guidance compiled from widely-used reference lists, not lab results for every formula. Concentration, the full formulation and your individual skin all affect the real outcome. Informational only — not medical advice.

How to use the comedogenic scale

The 0–5 comedogenic scale estimates how likely an ingredient is to clog pores. A 0 is considered non-comedogenic; a 5 is highly likely to cause clogged pores in acne-prone skin. Remember that an ingredient low on a product's INCI list is present in small amounts, so its rating matters less than one near the top.

Acne-safe alternatives

If your favourite product flags red, look for formulas built around low-rated ingredients such as squalane, hemp seed oil, argan oil, sunflower oil, glycerin, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. These deliver moisture and actives with a low chance of clogging pores.
