Does dairy cause acne?
Short answer: Possibly — especially skim milk.
Of all the diet–acne links, dairy has the most evidence behind it. Several large observational studies have found an association between milk intake — particularly skim milk — and acne. The leading explanation is that milk contains hormones and raises IGF-1, a growth factor that increases oil production and skin-cell turnover.
The link is a statistical association, not proof that dairy causes acne in everyone, and whole milk shows a weaker signal than skim. Plenty of people drink milk with clear skin — but if you break out and consume a lot of dairy, it's a reasonable thing to test.
What you can do
- Try a 4–6 week reduction in milk (especially skim) and track your skin.
- Watch whey and milk-protein supplements too, not just drinking milk.
- Reintroduce slowly to see whether your skin reacts.
