Does biotin cause acne?

Short answer: Possibly at high supplement doses.

Biotin (vitamin B7) is widely taken for hair and nails, and high-dose biotin supplements are anecdotally linked to breakouts. The proposed mechanism is that large amounts of biotin may compete with pantothenic acid (B5) for absorption, and B5 is involved in skin health. The evidence is limited and mostly anecdotal.

Biotin from food is not a concern; this is about mega-dose supplements (often 5,000–10,000 mcg).

Diet is only one piece. Many breakouts are driven by what you put on your skin. Paste your products into our comedogenic ingredient checker to rule out pore-clogging ingredients, and check for fungal-acne triggers if your bumps are small and itchy.
